What Next?

This is another one of those posts about something that I’ve talked about before. But I’m trying to figure out where to go next in my life. And once again, I have no clue.

In a little over two months I will have been working at this job for a year. That is half of the amount of time I said I would consider staying in this position. So it seems like a good time to start planning the next step. I have some options to consider.

Suck it up and stay in this job – This is the easy choice. I don’t really have to do anything. But then again, I’m stuck in this job.

Look for a new job in the department – I could talk to my bosses and see if they have any openings in a different position here in the department. I might get a more interesting job, but I’m not sure I like the turn the department is taking. And it would still be at WU…

Look for a new job at WU – I could see if there are any jobs elsewhere at the University. Again, I might get a more interesting job, but I’d still be at WU. And I wouldn’t be surrounded by people who loved my Grandfather…

Look for a new job in STL – Leave WU. Find a different job in STL. The problem here is that I’d really have little clue what I was getting into. But then again, this is how a lot of people do it. Maybe the best option.

Look for a new job in NYC – Kind of a crazy dream. Get a job in NYC. I’d be in NYC, which I love. But I’d be away from my family. And I certainly love them. It’d also be wicked hard to get a job in NYC, I fear. This plan would work better if Laura’s family would let me move in with them for a few months while looking for a job. Probably not likely…

Go Back to School – The option that sounds the dumbest if you know me, and yet the one I’ve been thinking about most recently. Currently I’m thinking about law school. Yes, I know that it is hard. Yes, I know I don’t like hard work. But maybe I just need to find something that I like. Right? And I worry that I need more education to advance in today’s society. And if I’m going to go back to school, now is probably the best time to do it. But it would mean going back to school…

So that’s pretty much what I’ve come up with so far. I’d be willing to listen to any advice that anyone has. And rest assured, I’ll probably ignore it, like I do most advice. :)

I would really like to see you take l night school class, in writing, because you really do have a talent for it.

Hmmm…This is a good time in your life to try something daring. I recommend you interview widely and take the coolest job you can. I do know of somebody in town looking for .NET help if you want that kind of thing, but my advice is to cast a wide net (though I avoid casts when possible :-)

I’d say stay until you find something new. Actively look and network in St. louis as for NYC start looking but be aware that you may not have a network set up which would be helpful.

I would love to have you into our company for an interview. We are looking for somebody right now. That last round of interviewing I told you about didn’t yield a hire… and now we are firing the other support person. I’m in a total bind and need someone fast. But, of course, if you can’t make it here in a 1-4 weeks, I can gauruntee you an interview (and most likely a job) when you do move to NY…. if the company is still open…. and you might hate the job too…. but anyhoo….

If living in the San Diego area interests you here’s the link to University of California, San Diego employment. I’ve worked there in the past.
