You may or may not know that currently SWA (Students Without clAsses) is protesting Washington University’s low pay of service workers. At first I was for them. Then I was against them. But as of today I have decided that I am for them, whole heartedly. Why, you ask? Because they are looking out for me.
Now, I haven’t looked into the details, because frankly, I don’t have the time. From what I understand, tho, SWA (Students Withholding from bAthing) wants the university to pay its service employees more money, because currently they are making below what is necessary to survive. And all this time I thought that I just had bad spending habits.
You see, I am in a service position here at the University. I fix people’s computers. And I’ve always thought that my salary was a little low. It is really hard to make my car payment, apartment payment, go out every weekend and buy new clothes every month on this salary. I can barely afford to keep a girlfriend! I didn’t think I was in a position to complain, however. I’m lucky to have a job in the current environment – I shouldn’t complain that I couldn’t afford the sunroof, right?
Well apparently I have every right to complain about not being able to buy real diamond stud earrings. (Note: I took the earrings out.) SWA (Slackers With Alackofanythingbettertodo) has shown me that I deserve a wage that I can live on. I thank them for that.
SWA (Suckerscaughtupin Workerswhodon’tlikethem’s Agenda) is really great. I sure hope that come next they’ll have made a difference not only in the smell of the admissions office, but the size of my checking account.

I don’t know the details of how they calculate what constitutes a living wage, but I’m pretty sure they base it on an “average” household, which you are certainly not. If you had a few children to raise, how far do you think your salary would go? Could you feed and clothe them? What if you were a single parent and sole provider? What about saving for their college education? Who will take care of the kids while you’re at work all day, and how will you pay for that? Suddenly, your salary doesn’t sound so big anymore, does it?
Most of the people who would be affected by a higher wage have a million other necessities to think about before they buy a pair of diamond earrings.
And Nate’s making a lot more per hour than these people are… And he gets the benefits.
Frankly though, you can’t live that well even on the nine dollars and some odd cents that the students are asking for. Not well at all.
These kinds of judgment calls are always hard…weighing it all out, sifting through the facts and deciding which side carries the day.
And this is a tough question if there ever was one – Who is more revolting, Washington University administration or Washington University students?
Probably best not to waste too much energy on the imponderables of life such as these. Certainly your heart is big enough to find loathing for both groups.
I wonder if anyone realized that this was a joke…
I think I see a right to life issue in this…..
I had made a hat like the Brits wore to the wedding (a cross between a compost heap and a birds nest) and I wore it to the needlework group to give everyone a laugh, but they did not get it. Even when I told them a joke, they really weren’t sure. They need me.
Not recognizing a good joke?
Sounds like my ex mother-in-law. Is she a member perhaps?
A compost heap ???
I SAY !!!
And I thought I was dressed up to the TENS.
