DMV

I had to get my license plates renewed yesterday, which is always a horrible experience, made even worse this time by the fact that my personal property taxes were all screwed up. See, in a mistake that I made, I forgot to change which car the city thinks I own, so I paid taxes on my old Volvo… Yeah. Not good. Because it is my understanding that your taxes are supposed to list the car that you are trying to renew the plates for, not just some random car that you don’t even own anymore.

I decided to take a chance, though, and took what forms I had and went to the license office and try to get the stuff renewed anyway. And I got amazingly lucky. I got a woman who either didn’t know, or didn’t care, because she just glanced at my forms, took my money, and handed me the stickers.

I was double lucky because the woman next to me was turned away because her car wasn’t listed on her personal property tax receipt. And I almost chose that line instead of mine.

So the moral here is to either make sure that you have all of your paperwork in order, or be very lucky. I like to think that the universe owed me a little bit of luck, though.

My worst DMV experience was when my poor mother was in a nursing home, yet wanted to keep her driver’s license. It is such a rite of personhood to have a license, so while I knew I would never let her drive, I did take her to get the license renewed. I practically had to carry her in and she was visibly trembling from the Parkinsons disease, yet they gave her the license without any question.
