Harry Potter – The Update

So now I definitely feel a little dumb for thinking for so many years that Harry Potter wasn’t worth my time. Because since I last posted about the books, I’m pretty much done with the series. I flew through the first 6 and am now about halfway through the 7th, which is the most intense, and I can’t stand that I can’t just go home and finish it.

I guess I put off reading them for so long because I thought that they were “kids books” and were going to be really stupid. But I was really wrong. While the first 2 definitely read somewhat like kids books, the rest are distinctly adult. The characters, especially Harry, are very deep, and profoundly imperfect. Even though they are wizards, they are identifiable.

My favorite thing is probably the story arc, though. It is well crafted with things coming up several books later that turn out to be important. And it is a battle of good vs. evil where good and evil are very similar.

So yeah, if you haven’t read them, you definitely need to give them a try. And now there is no reason not to, because the series is all written, so you can read all of them and not be kept waiting.

I love children’s/YA literature. There is truly a lot of smart books that are written with a younger audience in mind.
