The Economy

I’m legitimately scared about the economy. I’ve been listening to Marketplace and reading, and it seems like things could really be getting bad.

I guess the scariest part is I don’t really understand all of it, and I don’t know what to do to protect myself against it, and I really don’t even know what “it” is.

You’re a Marketplace listener too? Yay!

I don’t think you have to worry as you work at a university doing something that’s rather important to their day-to-day operations. It’s those in the tourism, hospitality, retail and restaurant industries as well as the artists that have to be worried. Those are the areas that are always the most affected in a recession. As long as you don’t have a variable interest rate you should be able to ride this wave just fine.

I do have to be worried, however. Going for a business degree and wanting to start up a retail store. Not certain that’s going to happen now as the type of retail always shows the first signs in a down wave (outdoor apparel and recreational equipment are always the first to go in a family budget cutback).

If you really want to be scared, listen to your grandma.

I just pretend it’s not happening. Not the smartest thing, I know. We make about 60K less than we did when we were in our 20s and have more expenses, and we are still OK for now. I just hope we can ride the wave (hubby works retail and much income and stability is based on what he sells) and come out OK when it’s over. I know I may have to go back to work fulltime, but my kids would rather eat a loaf of bread then mcdonald’s, so there’s always that…
