Sailplanes

Many years ago Dad and I would fly remote control sailplanes. I don’t even remember how long ago the last time we flew was. It was at least over 10 years ago, because we didn’t fly at all once we moved into the city. We started flying little foam airplanes, but the large gliders had gone by the wayside. It must have been pretty sudden that we quit, because I have a sailplane that we were working on building sitting in my basement, 70% finished.

Anyway, for a while I’ve been thinking about getting back into the hobby, and so a few days ago I looked up and contacted the local remote control sailplane club. They have been super nice, and have a field out in St. Peters where you can fly. So I’m going to head out there soon with Dad’s old glider, the Gentle Lady, which amazingly enough is still in flying condition with the addition of my new controller and associated equipment.

I also mentioned this to Dad, and he was excited. We’ve decided that we’re going to finish up that old plane so that it can finally see some sky. And I have a couple of other kits sitting in my basement that we’re going to work on eventually. And Kelly and I have a kit that is about 80% completed. Honestly, I think that I like the building of the planes as much if not more than the flying. I guess it is just more fun to build something that actually works than just a model.

So anyway, I’m really excited about this. I’ve wanted to get back into it for years, but never thought to see if there was a local club until a few days ago. And I’m glad that I did, because now I have something to do as opposed to just flying around on my computer.
